WHAT IS A RMR TEST?

The Moses Method™ Uses RMR Testing to measure your (resting metabolic rate) — the approximate amount of energy your body uses while resting to maintain breathing, circulation, body temperature, and organ function.

During the test, you typically relax in a chair while breathing through a mask or mouthpiece for about 10–20 minutes. The equipment measures oxygen used and carbon dioxide produced to estimate your daily resting energy needs.

RMR is influenced by age, body size, muscle mass, genetics, hormones, health, and medications. It is more individualized than an online calculator, but it’s still an estimate—not an exact daily calorie requirement. For teens, results should be interpreted by a qualified healthcare professional because energy needs also include growth and development.

Why RMR is important - Body Scan

UNDERSTANDING YOUR BODY

What Is a
RMR Test?

Resting Metabolic Rate test sows the approximate amount of energy your body uses while at rest to maintain breathing, circulation, body temperature, and organ function. The lower this number at rest the healthier your body is.

Note: Scan results should always be discussed with a qualified medical professional.

What exactly is a RMR Test?

An RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) test measures how many calories your body burns at rest—just to keep you alive (breathing, circulation, basic organ function). It’s done by measuring your oxygen use and carbon dioxide output, which is the most accurate way to estimate your baseline calorie needs.

What does it measure?

You’ll get your true daily calorie burn at rest (your RMR), plus insights from your breathing data (metabolic efficiency / fuel use). We use your result to calculate more accurate calorie targets for fat loss, maintenance, or muscle gain—rather than relying on generic online calculators.

What is the appointment like?

It’s simple and non-invasive. You’ll relax in a chair while breathing normally through a mask for about 10–15 minutes. For best accuracy, come rested, avoid hard exercise beforehand, and follow any pre-test fasting instructions we give you.

Who is a RMR Test useful for?

Anyone who wants precise nutrition targets—especially if you’ve plateaued, have a “slow/fast metabolism” concern, or you’re serious about body recomposition. It’s also great for athletes and busy professionals who want to stop guessing and build a plan based on real data.

Understanding Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Tests

Your health and fitness goals don’t have to feel like a guessing game. Understanding how your body works—right down to the calories it burns while you’re at rest—can give you a clear roadmap to success. That’s where a Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test comes in. It’s a simple, informative tool that uncovers exactly how much energy your body needs to function when you’re not moving. Curious about how it works and how it can benefit you? Let’s break it down.

What is a Resting Metabolic Rate Test?

Ever wonder how many calories your body burns just to keep you alive? That’s what RMR tells you! From breathing to growing cells to circulating blood, your body’s basic functions require energy, even when you’re not active. Your RMR is the number of calories you need to sustain these functions, and it accounts for the bulk of your daily caloric burn.

Getting an RMR test is easier than you might think. Using a special device called a metabolic cart, the test measures the oxygen you take in and the carbon dioxide you breathe out while resting. You’ll relax, breathe into a mask or mouthpiece, and in 15–30 minutes, you’ll have your results. These results offer a clear picture of your calorie needs at rest, helping you create a fitness or nutritional plan tailored exactly to your body.

It’s worth noting that RMR and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) aren’t the same, though they’re often confused. BMR measurements require stricter testing conditions—like fasting and waking up first thing in the morning—while RMR tests are often more practical for everyday use.

The Science Behind RMR Testing

Metabolism and Your Caloric Needs

At its core, metabolism is how your body converts food and drink into energy, even when you’re doing nothing at all. Your RMR represents the minimum calories you need to keep your body running at rest. But it’s only part of the picture. Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) adds in the calories your body burns during activities like exercising and digesting food. Knowing your RMR gives you a head start in calculating your TDEE—and ultimately, managing your weight.

RMR isn’t one-size-fits-all; it’s unique to you. Factors like your age, gender, muscle mass, and even genetics influence your metabolic rate. For instance, the more muscle you have, the higher your RMR—muscle burns more calories than fat. If your metabolic rate tends to slow down with age, strength training can help counteract that, keeping your metabolism more active.

Why Knowing Your RMR Matters

Tailored Nutrition and Workouts

One of the standout perks of knowing your RMR is how it can guide your diet choices. A generic diet plan might not consider your body’s specific needs, but this data allows you to craft a plan that’s customized, effective, and sustainable. Whether you’re focused on losing weight, building muscle, or just feeling your best, understanding your RMR helps ensure you’re eating the right amount of calories for your goals.

This knowledge applies to exercise, too. If you know how many calories you naturally burn at rest, it’s easier to calculate the additional calories you can burn through workouts. Whether you’re targeting a calorie deficit for weight loss or need extra calories for muscle growth and recovery, your RMR results give you a solid foundation for planning.

Is an RMR Test Right for You?

Who Benefits from RMR Testing

RMR testing can be a game-changer for several groups of people. Athletes can use it to fine-tune their training and nutrition plans. If you’re managing your weight—whether you’re aiming to lose, maintain, or gain—it provides clarity on what your body really needs. And for those with conditions like thyroid disorders or metabolic syndrome, an RMR test can be a helpful tool for monitoring and managing your health.
